‘Guts’ is the breakout single of the new, Brooklyn-based punk group Grim Streaker. This five-piece band, composed of Amelia Bushell on vocals, Daniel Peskin and Micah Weisberg on guitar, Bill Dvorak on bass, and Piyal Basu on drums, may be new but their sound says they’re ready to play for stadiums.
‘Guts’ has everything a perfect punk track has: ferocious energy, screaming guitars, pummeling drums, and a wonderfully short track time (2:20). Everything about the track screams punk rock and it has genuine songwriting craft. I only wish that the song’s production was as good as it’s compositional skills. Amelia Bushell’s vocals are distorted and great but a little too low in the mix for my taste. The mix itself seems pretty compressed and almost too tight, which takes away from the dynamic explosions throughout the runtime.
The band throws in some sounds from goth rock, post-punk, and skate rock in there too. It’s like they took the blueprint that bands like Japandroids, Beach Slang, and the countless other pop-punk bands formed and made it something all their own.
Overall, an amazing start to a hopefully long and successful career. Check out the full song below.
