If a band’s native city inherently influences its sound, Brooklyn influences Little Person by pulling the band away from the city and making the quartet dream of sunny days at the beach. While New York bands tend to be reminiscent of The Velvet Underground and The Strokes, Little Person hints more at The Beach Boys than anything else.
“She Loves You” opens the album with two guitars that work together so well it seems like they’re having a conversation. The drums give the track a heartbeat, and dream-like vocals permeate the song. The track talks about a woman loving someone, who supposedly is the singer’s friend, but the story is less important and the lyrics are drowned out by the song’s instrumentals – possibly reflecting the intensity of the feeling and excitement towards a potential relationship.
“Send Me Your Nots,” on the other hand, has clearer vocals and the chorus is almost asking the listener to sing along. Harmonies and a remarkable guitar solo give the song a beach, summer-y vibe which almost makes you picture it being played on a beach in Hawaii.
“I Feel Fine” is a complete different side of Little Person. No layers, distorted guitars, harmonies, only a stripped back acoustic guitar with crystal clear vocals at the start. Gradually, the song builds up into Little Person’s harmonies and percussion, only to slow down again and build up again. It is a different take on Little Person’s sound, but it stands out as one of the best and most genuine and ambitious tracks on the album. It is unexpected but definitely welcoming and one that invites you back for a second listen just so you can try to discover more unexpected twists.
“Perfect Girls,” album closer, merges the acoustic characteristic of “I Feel Fine” with the sun-infused harmonies and guitar riffs of “She Loves You” and “Send Me Your Notes,” combining Little Person’s two identities into one song. It is a strong foot to end on, since it shows you the band’s versatility and potential, and is mysterious and appealing enough to instantly make you want to listen to I Feel Fine all over again.
