Hot Damn! Brooklyn has an amazing new band in its backyard…um well, windowsill planter.
Plaid Dracula was a glam-thrash, vampire duo that started in 1865 Transylvania (presently Brooklyn-based) consisting of Sam Gelernter (guitar/vocals) and Jake Backer (guitar/vocals; also plays in El Silver Cabs). After they recorded their album, they recruited Ethan Schneiderto the undead to play drums; making it a trio.
Get on their good side, give them some beer and blood, according to ‘Intermission (Give Us Your Blood).’
Plaid Dracula opens up with a sonic morphine hit, ‘Accidents Are Dirty.’ I’m addicted. That opening riff gets you moving and grooving; match that riff with upbeat drumming and you’re ready to hit the dancefloor (even if you’re a wallflower like me). At around 1:06, the instruments fade in and out allowing harmonizing vocals to fill the gaps. Then, the song drops back in, harder than the first half. After repeating the chorus again and it fades out, a guitar solo chimes in for the remainder of the song. And in the few closing seconds of the song, hit that rewind button because this song deserves to be listened to again.
‘Yer Maker’ is a straight-up punk song. “I’m feeling 22, I ain’t got much to do, I like my music loud” – oh so relatable. Clocking in at 1:45, it’s a short, but energetic, dynamic number. Listen to this at work, you might start daydreaming about moshing in a sea of people in a dimly-lit venue space (ah, paradise!). Next, ‘Desperate Judy Blues,’ a chill, laid-back blues-rock tune that reminds us that “Jack White taught us how to rock n’ roll.” A groovy, love song between troublesome, rebel Jesse and desperate, utterly smitten Judy. Between the verses, the song gets heavier and a catchy synth riff gets piped in.
These blood-sucking, creatures of the night love beer and playing music loud. Check them out on Facebook and give them a listen:
