‘Trip,’ the newest single from Brooklyn heavy psychedelic three-piece Sun Voyager, off their upcoming debut album, leads us on a steady march straight to hell.
Ominous droning low end breaks into fuzzed out stoner goodness that’s as driving as it is relentless. At no point in the three minutes and twenty one seconds of ‘Trip’ does the band feel the need to back off their pounding groove, except only for vocalist and guitarist Carlos Francisco to layer on blues-based guitar riffs that add to the entrancing, methodical and deliberate push.
“Oh brothers, now’s the time / Now’s the time,” Francisco sings, sounding equally like a rally cry and a warning. And now may certainly be the time for the three Brooklynites, originally hailing from the Hudson Valley. Their long-anticipated debut album is looking more and more likely for release this year via King Pizza Records and their show schedule includes popular hot spots Saint Vitus Bar and Shea Stadium. For the band who have been buzzing in the New York scene for the last few years, thanks to a series of short but hard hitting releases, including a split with label mates The Mad Doctors, 2017 is looking to be their year.
With ‘Trip,’ Sun Voyager set the bar high for their self-titled album release that we hope shines a light on the dark, driving and foreboding forces at work in their music. To that end, I’ll march to hell right alongside them.
