Slime music isn’t exactly the most well known sub-genre of rock music but it’s what HEADLESSMANTIS calls themselves so, fuck it, that’s what they are.
HEADLESSMANTIS hails from Richmond, Virginia and consists of Tim Othy (aka Tam Brodgewatur) on drums and vocals, Dev Ham (Noved Remmah) on guitar and vocals, and Jeff Plasmacat (PLasmaCat Suckapuss) (?) on guitar and slime machine. Their latest single ‘Dad Gene Dreams’ just dropped on New Years Eve on King Pizza Records and boy, is it slimy.
Right from the single’s cover art, I could tell this was going to be a trippy one so I got excited. The song kicks off with beautiful, atmospheric pianos reminiscent of something off of an Animal Collective record. Around the 1:20 mark, the driving guitar groove bursts in and leads the rest of the song into a rockin’ and groovy psych rock track something Tame Impala would be proud of. The lyrics, I can only guess, are about drugs and the singer’s desire to get away from people “bonded by chemicals.” A message all our mothers can be proud of.
The reverb-soaked vocals get drowned out at times from the production’s hazy and lo-fi sound. This record has space to get lost in, which works well for the psychedelic atmosphere but at the cost of lyrical comprehension.
Who cares, though? Al I know is that this is one slimy track with a great atmosphere and a rockin’ groove that you should all check out.
